Research Paper Abstract

"A Different Kind of Shape-Shifter: Loyalty and Human-Animal Relationships in Marie de France's Lais"

My focus is on the human to animal connections in Marie de France’s Lais. Specifically, I will be examining how animals act as go-betweens or messengers between human and supernatural lovers. We can see examples of this in “Eliduc,” “Guigemar,” and “Milun” especially, where birds become both symbolic representations of the lovers’ desire, and the messengers that facilitate their forbidden love. Using an ecocritical or post-humanist lens, I argue that our relationship with animals is more central than we typically imagine–and that much of our understanding of romantic relationships gets played out with and by animal companions.
